Jack Johnson era un surfista profesional quien tuvo un accidente que le obligó a descansar durante un tiempo. Pasó todo el tiempo de la recuperación componiendo canciones y tocando la guitarra.
Jack nació en Oahu, Hawaii, en 1.975 y antes de dedicarse a la música fue uno de los mejores surfistas juveniles del mundo. Su carrera fue truncada por una ola gigante que casi lo mata y que lo obligó a abandonar la competición a los 17 años.
Pero este accidente no le impidió seguir ligado al surf. Al cumplir la mayoría de edad, viajó a California, a matricularse en la Universidad de California en Santa Bárbara. Una vez finalizados sus estudios encaminó una aventura con sus inseparables amigos Chris y Emmett Malloy que daría lugar a su primera película de surf, 'Thicker Than Water' que llegó a ser muy aclamada por el mundillo surfero. En esta película Jack escribió algunas de las canciones que formarían parte de la banda sonora, esto provocó la entrada de Jack Johnson en el mundo musical.
